City of Moose Jaw and Firefighters’ Association Reach Resolutions
MOOSE JAW - The City of Moose Jaw and the Moose Jaw Firefighters’ Association (MJFFA) Local 553 resolved all outstanding labour issues earlier this week. The Local Association voted to accept the agreement on June 21, 2016, after an agreement was negotiated June 13 and 14, 2016.
“The parties acted cordially and agreed to negotiate all outstanding labour relations issues relating to the reorganization within the Moose Jaw Fire Department during that session. We understand the Association executive recommended the deal and we know as a fact that the Association membership ratified the settlement,” stated Rod Montgomery, Fire Chief.
City Administration is pleased to announce both parties were successful in coming to an agreement on June 14 with it being fully ratified by the MJFF Association members on June 21, 2016.
On July 13, 2015, the City’s Personnel Committee had provided Administration with an initial monetary mandate to offer for severance. This severance was over and above the statutory requirement spelled out in the Saskatchewan Employment Act and the collective agreement with the IAFF. City Administration offered it as a gesture of goodwill to the outgoing employees.
“The agreement reached was within the confines of the committee’s initial mandate and the parties collaborated to resolve all outstanding labour relations issues,” commented Al Bromley, Director of HR Services.
The City of Moose Jaw is looking forward to a more efficient operation of the Department through the new management structure agreed to by the parties and is committed to working with the Association to ensure the effective operation of the Fire Department for the citizens of Moose Jaw.
