City Councillor – Don Mitchell
I’ve served thirteen years on city council, three of those as mayor. I’m married and have two adult children. I’ve been active on social and political issues throughout my life. I’m an avid gardener, musician, and, alternately, a recreational curler and softball player.
I try to follow the motto ‘think globally act locally’. Major global issues, including inequality, climate change, racism, hunger, homelessness, mass migration and refugees, are connected to or reflected in our community. Issues I try to give priority to through city council and our advisory committees include municipal support for waste reduction, alternative energy production and reduction of carbon emissions. Also, I support fair and equitable taxation, social housing, promotion of local food production, and cultural diversity and inclusion. I’m a council representative on six advisory committees and/or third party boards and commissions dealing with some of these issues.
Our city struggles with limited tax resources and we need to plan carefully to ensure we are meeting the priority needs of the community fairly, effectively and efficiently. I’m interested in your concerns and suggestions and can be reached at 692-6710 or through e-mail.
