Mayor Tolmie’s New Year Address
Delivered in Council Chambers – January 9, 2017
With the ringing in of the New Year, we are stepping into a new future.
2016 is the year the citizens of Moose Jaw decided that they wanted to face the challenges of tomorrow – together.
In a world of iphones, ipads, and self-checkouts Moose Jaw resoundingly declared that WE are better together and that we need to face tomorrow’s challenges together.
The hard work of those who have gone before us should be honoured and remembered. Dedication and strong work ethic went into many successful projects in our City in 2016.
As we – the generation of today – receive the torch, we recognize that a new spirit has come over this City – a spirit of enthusiasm with the initiative to forge a different future from our past – without forgetting who we are or losing our identity.
Let us not dwell on what divided us in the past, but face 2017 with a renewed sense of purpose. The mandate that has been entrusted to this Council is to set a clear vision for the future. We need to collectively acknowledge the past and accept that we were elected with the confidence to make change and accept the responsibility of office. We know our Council will need to make some tough decisions.
We will set a vision to allow management to be productive for the benefit of Moose Jaw residents. We will serve others together, as a team.
We will work together to make long-lasting positive impacts in our City – impacts that will benefit residents today and into the future.
Our goal is to modernize City Hall – to improve the delivery of customer service to our residents. To operate more efficiently and to remain fiscally responsible.
To ensure that safe, reliable, sustainable services are provided to our residents. To attract more tourism, special events and commercial businesses to our City.
And our main goal is to work together – Council and Management – to make these good things happen.
Let 2017 be Moose Jaw’s year!
