Through the City's Building Inspector positions, the City ensures the safety of construction projects through the review of plans and inspection of the construction process. All construction within the City must conform to the National Building Code.

The Planning & Building Branch also plans for new growth and developments. The Branch administers subdivision and rezoning and Discretionary Use applications, and conducts studies on growth and opportunities for development.

The major project in this area will be the preparation of a Official Community Plan(OCP) and revised Zoning Bylaw to guide the City's growth over the next 20 years. The Official Community Plan(OCP) and Zoning Bylaw help to ensure that the City develops in an orderly and sustainable manner, and that incompatible land uses are separated.
