Firefighting - A Career For You
Outdoor Fireplaces

Since the inception of the City of Moose Jaw Career Fire Department in 1906 it has been our goal to "Save Lives and Protect Property".

The Moose Jaw Fire Department is a fifty seven member full time career professional fire department that provides emergency services to the residents of the City Of Moose Jaw. In addition we are under contract to provide structural fire suppression services to 15 Wing Moose Jaw, the military base south of the city. We also have fire service agreements with six rural municipalities and several resort villages that surround the city.

We operate a four-platoon system with two ten-hour days from 8:00am to 6:00pm and two fourteen-hour night shifts from 6:00pm to 8:00am. Firefighters then receive four days off. The shifts are comprised of three fire officers and nine firefighters for each platoon. In addition we have nine support personnel made up of one fire prevention officers, one mechanic, four alarm room operators, a public education officer and the Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Chief.

New Fire HallIn order to maintain an initial five-minute response time to anywhere in the city we respond from two fire stations. Each station has a minimum of five response personnel on duty. One pumper responds from the South Hill Station and one pumper and an Aerial ladder truck responds from the North Hill Station.

In 2008 we answered 656 emergency calls, composed of wild land fires, structure fires, vehicle fires, hazardous materials responses, vehicle extrications, and other miscellaneous rescue calls. We are part of a tiered medical response team and were dispatched to approximately 55 medical assistance calls in 2008. All responding personnel are at minimum first responder trained and we have approximately twenty seven Saskatchewan Licensed Primary Care Paramedics on staff. Every first response pumper truck is equipped with a basic trauma life support kit.

After 100 years of service to the community, it is easy to see that the Moose Jaw Fire Department has come a long way in the technical, training and staffing areas, however, our goal to "Save Lives and Protect Property" has never faltered.
