The program is for children ages 6 to 12 years and is free of charge to participants. Qualified staff supervises each playground with training in the area of play, arts, crafts, story telling, games and drama (Play Leadership Workshop). Each staff is also certified with Standard First Aid and CPR.
For many years the Parks and Recreation Department has operated the Playground Program in some form or another. The Department has coordinated the program on their own or in conjunction with other organizations within the city. In 1994 the Department replaced the Paddling Pool Program, which had operated at four paddling pools, in the city with the Playground Program. The Playground Program now operates at ten playgrounds throughout the city which includes the three existing paddling pools.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Playground Program is to provide a cost-efficient play program utilizing city playgrounds and making the program accessible to as many children as possible within the city.
Objectives of the Playground Program
While the playground is an area designed to serve the primary play interests and needs of children; the Parks and Recreation’s Playground Program is to provide safe, positive, creative and developmental play experiences for children ages six to twelve years of age. The primary goal of the playground program is to encourage and guide the development of the children’s character, creativeness, social attitude, health, and happiness in all their activities. Participation in playground activities conducted under qualified leadership and in a fun, safe, and healthy manner will enhance skills and interests which will contribute to the child’s character now and for continued enjoyment later in life.
